Pest Control Lead Response Time: Reply Within 5 Minutes

By Sharrk Team · October 22, 2026

A pest control company should respond to a new lead within 5 minutes, and a caller with wasps by the front door, rodents in the kitchen or bed bugs should get an answer right away. Sharrk replies to every new lead in under 30 seconds by AI text or AI call, 24/7, so the homeowner hears from you before they call the next company.

The research behind that number is consistent. Pest leads are usually people with a problem in the house today, which makes speed matter even more than it does in most trades.

What is a good lead response time for pest control?

Under 5 minutes is the target. Under 1 minute is better, and an hour is already late.

Response timeWhat the research shows
Within 5 minutesOdds of contacting a lead are 100 times higher, and odds of qualifying it 21 times higher, than at 30 minutes (InsideSales, citing Dr. James Oldroyd)
Within 1 hourFirms that responded within an hour were nearly 7 times as likely to qualify the lead as firms that waited an hour longer (HBR research, as reported by SmartCompany)
24 hours or moreFirms that responded within an hour were more than 60 times as likely to qualify the lead as firms that waited 24 hours or more (same source)
Typical businessOf 2,241 US companies audited, 37% responded within an hour, and the average response time was 42 hours (same source)

The 2011 study, "The Short Life of Online Sales Leads," was published in Harvard Business Review by James Oldroyd, Kristina McElheran and David Elkington (BYU ScholarsArchive). It wasn't specific to pest control, but pest software vendor PestPac makes the same point for the industry: it says the highest close rates come from responding in five minutes or less (PestPac).

Why do pest control leads go cold so fast?

Most pest leads aren't shopping around for later. In a review of 3,699 first-time calls from qualified pest control leads across 19 companies, pest marketing firm Pesty Marketing found that 67% of callers already had an active infestation. The same analysis ranked speed and availability as callers' first priority, ahead of scope of service and price (Applause blog, guest post by Pesty Marketing). This is a vendor analysis, so treat it as an estimate. It still fits what most owners see: someone who just found droppings in the pantry wants the first company that picks up.

The lead sources reward speed too:

  • Angi recommends calling each lead within 15 minutes and setting up automated responses so leads get an immediate reply (Angi help). For more on that channel, see our guide to Angi lead response time.
  • Google Local Services Ads says that if you regularly fail to answer calls or respond to messages, your ad ranking may be affected (Google Local Services help).

Which pest calls need an answer right away?

Every lead should hear from you within minutes. What changes by pest is how fast you need to get a tech on site and how much the job is worth. Use this to set priorities for your team and your after-hours rules.

PestHow urgent the visit isWhy it matters
Wasps, hornets, yellowjackets near a doorSame dayNPMA reports more than half a million emergency room visits a year from insect stings, says activity rises in summer, and warns people never to remove a nest themselves (NPMA)
Rodents inside the homeSame day or next dayNPMA's Harris Poll survey found 27% of Americans found a rodent in their home in the past year, and 9% had an infestation (NPMA via Business Wire)
Bed bugsSame day or next dayThe caller is living with the problem tonight, so book the inspection on the first call
TermitesInspection within a few daysLower dispatch urgency, but high value: NPMA says termites cause more than $5 billion in property damage a year, typically not covered by homeowners insurance (NPMA)
Ants, spiders, general pestsNext available visitGood candidates for a recurring plan, so qualify for a service agreement on the first call

Termite leads are the trap. The swarm may be gone by the time you call back, but the homeowner is still collecting inspection quotes. A fast first reply and a booked inspection keep a high-value job from going to the company that answered first.

When do pest control response times slip?

They slip when the phone rings most. Pest software vendor Briostack notes that in most of the US, peak season starts in early spring, with the phone "ringing off the hook," and it says customers expect fast service no matter the time of year (Briostack). The pattern by season looks like this:

  • Spring: termite swarms and ant calls arrive as temperatures rise.
  • Summer: stinging insect calls climb (NPMA).
  • Fall and winter: rodents push indoors looking for shelter, food and water (NPMA via Business Wire), and NPMA says rodents invade millions of homes each winter (NPMA).

Peak weeks are when techs are on routes, office staff are buried and leads sit for hours. If your response time only holds up in February, it doesn't really hold up.

How do you respond to every pest lead in 5 minutes?

  1. Measure it. Pull last month's web form, Angi and Local Services leads and note how long each waited for first contact. Most owners are surprised.
  2. Reply automatically to every new lead. Send a text or place a call within seconds, at any hour, that asks what pest they're seeing and where.
  3. Ask the triage questions up front. Pest type, where it is (inside, near a door, in the attic), how long it's been going on and the address. Our pest control call script has the wording.
  4. Route by urgency. Stinging insects at an entry and rodents inside go to the top of today's schedule. Termites get a booked inspection slot.
  5. Follow up if they don't answer. A single attempt isn't enough. See how many times to follow up with a lead.
  6. Staff for the season. Plan your coverage for peak months, not average ones.

How Sharrk handles pest control lead response

Sharrk answers every call 24/7 and replies to new leads in under 30 seconds by AI text and/or AI call. Leads from Angi, Thumbtack, Networx, web forms and webhooks (such as Meta lead ads through Zapier or Make) come straight in, and Jobber clients and requests come in as leads too. The agent asks your triage questions, saves the answers (address, pest, job type) as post-call fields, and books the visit onto Sharrk's calendar, Calendly, Cal.com or ServiceTitan. When a caller needs a person, it does a live or warm transfer. You get a text or email alert after each call.

If a lead doesn't reply, a Strike keeps going with multi-step follow-up: AI texts, texts, emails, AI calls and voicemail drops, with sending windows and stop rules. For old estimates and past customers who've given consent to be contacted, a Hunt reactivates the list before busy season.

Mako, the AI assistant inside Sharrk, builds all of this from plain English. Type "answer pest control leads in under 30 seconds, ask what pest they see and where, and book wasp and rodent jobs for today," and Mako builds the agent and the Strike for you to review.

You can build and test agents for free on Sharrk Free with 2,500 one-time credits and no card, or schedule a demo to see it on your own lead sources. Plans are on the pricing page.
