Google Local Services Ads response time: answer every call live and reply to messages within minutes, because Google ranks responsiveness
By Sharrk Team · October 27, 2026
Answer every Google Local Services Ads call live, and reply to message leads within minutes. Google says it uses your responsiveness when it ranks Local Services Ads, says missed calls can hurt that, and counts average response time in profile quality. Sharrk helps with the phone side: forward your LSA calls to Sharrk's AI voice agent and it answers every call 24/7, books the job or live-transfers the caller to you.
This post covers speed: what Google measures and how to stay responsive. For what leads cost, see Google Local Services Ads cost. For getting money back on bad leads, see Google LSA lead credits.
Does response time affect Google Local Services Ads ranking?
Yes. Google's "About ad rankings" help page says your ad's position depends on your bid and on how likely your ad is to result in a lead. One of the factors in that second part is "your responsiveness to customer inquiries and requests," and the page adds: "Missed calls may negatively affect your responsiveness."
Response time also shows up a second time on the same page, in the list of profile quality factors: "Your rating, number of reviews, average response time, use of high-quality images" and other details. Google says higher-quality profiles "may rank higher and may also pay lower costs per lead."
Google's "Manage leads and jobs" page is even more direct: "It's highly recommended that you respond to leads as soon as they come in," and "Having a consistently fast response time could improve your ad's ranking on search."
Google does not publish a target number of minutes or a formula. The defensible rule from its own pages is simple: don't miss calls, and answer messages fast and consistently.
How fast should you respond to each type of LSA lead?
| Lead type | Target | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Phone call | Answer live, every time | Google says missed calls may hurt responsiveness, and from October 1, 2026 many missed calls during business hours are charged |
| Message lead | Within minutes | Google may show an estimated reply time on your ad, from "a few minutes" to "one day" |
| Booking request | As soon as it arrives | Google recommends responding to all leads as soon as they come in |
| Missed call you couldn't avoid | Call back right away | Google counts answered or returned calls as valid leads, so you are likely paying for it already |
Booking requests are available only in the US and Canada, according to Google's "How leads work" page.
Does Google show your response time on your ad?
For message leads, it can. Google's "Manage leads and jobs" page says: "If you have 2 or more message leads in the last 90 days, estimated messaging response times may appear in your ads." The estimates range from "a few minutes" to "one day."
That label sits in front of the homeowner while they decide who to contact. A business shown as replying in a few minutes looks like a safer bet for a leaking pipe than one shown as replying in a day. Aim for the shortest label.
What changed with LSA missed calls in 2026?
Two changes matter for response time.
Missed calls can now cost you money. Search Engine Roundtable reported on August 25, 2026 that Google emailed advertisers: "Missed calls during business hours will now be charged as valid leads" when the caller stays on the line for more than 20 seconds, starting October 1, 2026. Google's "How leads work" page now says a missed call is charged when "You missed a phone call during your business hours and the customer stays on the line for more than 20 seconds." Google's Ads Liaison clarified that follow-up calls with the same person within 15 days of the first interaction are charged only once.
So a missed call is now a double loss: you may pay for the lead, and your responsiveness can take a hit. PPC Land noted that answering does not lower the charge, because an answered call is also a valid lead. Answering is still the only way you get the job out of a call you paid for.
LSA is moving into Google Ads. Google's help page on the transition says Local Services Ads are moving into Google Ads as Performance Max campaigns with pay-per-lead goals, starting with select US home and storefront service advertisers in August 2026, broader groups in late 2026 and non-US accounts in 2027. The new Leads page replaces the old LSA inbox, and you can reply to message leads there. Business hours sync from your Google Business Profile. Make sure whoever answers leads knows where the new inbox lives and has notifications turned on.
Should your business hours match the hours you can answer?
Yes. Google's "How leads work" page says "business hours" are the hours set in your Google Business Profile, and unanswered calls are charged only within your business hours and active ad schedule. If your profile says you are open until 8pm but nobody picks up after 5pm, every caller who waits more than 20 seconds in that gap can become a charged missed call.
You have two clean options:
- Shorten the hours in your Business Profile and ad schedule to the hours you can really answer. You get fewer calls, and fewer missed calls.
- Keep the hours and cover the phone with a person or an answering service. You keep the calls and stop missing them. Our guide to forwarding calls to an answering service covers the setup.
Google itself suggests turning on message and booking leads so customers can reach you "during nights and weekends when you can't answer the phone."
How do you reply to an LSA message lead?
Keep it short, answer what they asked, and offer a next step. A sample reply:
"Hi Dana, this is Chris with Northside Heating (sample). Thanks for reaching out about your furnace. Is it not turning on at all, or running but blowing cold air? I can have a technician there today between 2 and 4 or tomorrow between 9 and 11. Which works better?"
Then call if they share a number and the job is urgent. Google treats either a call or a message in the past 15 days as a recent interaction with that customer.
What is the fastest way to stay responsive on LSA?
- Turn on call and message notifications for at least one person who can act on them right away.
- Answer every call during listed hours. If you can't, route the line to someone who can.
- Reply to message leads in minutes from the Leads page or the notification email.
- Match listed business hours to the hours you truly cover.
- Pause the ad when you are on vacation or fully booked. Google says you can pause anytime you're too busy to take new requests.
- Review your leads weekly and dispute ones that are clearly invalid, using the lead credit process.
How does Sharrk answer Google LSA calls?
Sharrk's AI voice agent answers calls forwarded from any number, so you can point the phone number your LSA calls ring to at Sharrk and have every call picked up 24/7, including nights, weekends and the hours you are on a job. The agent asks your qualifying questions, then books the visit onto Sharrk's calendar (with a confirmation email and text and a 24-hour reminder), onto Calendly or Cal.com, or straight into ServiceTitan with real arrival windows by business unit, job type and technician. When a caller needs a person, the agent live-transfers them to your cell, and the caller still sees your business number.
If the caller doesn't book, Sharrk Strikes keep following up automatically by AI call, text and email, branching on whether the lead answered, went to voicemail or booked, and stopping when the lead asks to stop or replies.
Mako, Sharrk's AI assistant, builds all of this from plain English. Tell Mako "answer my Google Local Services calls, book furnace repairs into ServiceTitan and transfer emergencies to my cell," and it drafts the agent for you. Every change shows on an Apply card, Mako waits for your OK, and you can Undo.
Build and test it on Sharrk Free with 2,500 one-time credits and no card, then go live on Core at $99 a month. Want to see it first? Schedule a demo.

Frequently asked questions
Does responding faster improve my Google Local Services Ads ranking?
Yes, Google says it can. Its help pages list responsiveness to customer inquiries as a ranking factor, list average response time under profile quality, and say a consistently fast response time could improve your ad's ranking.
How fast should I reply to an LSA message lead?
Reply within minutes. Google may show an estimated messaging response time on your ad once you have 2 or more message leads in 90 days, ranging from "a few minutes" to "one day," so faster replies earn the better label.
Do missed calls hurt my LSA ranking?
They can. Google's "About ad rankings" page says missed calls may negatively affect your responsiveness, which is part of how ads are ranked.
Does Google charge for missed Local Services Ads calls?
Yes, since October 1, 2026, in many cases. Google charges a missed call as a valid lead when it happens during your business hours and the caller stays on the line for more than 20 seconds.
Is there a set response time Google requires for LSA?
No, Google does not publish a required number of minutes. It recommends responding to leads as soon as they come in and treats missed calls and slow responses as signs of lower responsiveness.
Can an AI voice agent answer my Google LSA calls?
Yes, if you forward the number your LSA calls ring to. Sharrk's AI voice agent answers forwarded calls 24/7, books the job on your calendar or in ServiceTitan, and can live-transfer the caller to your cell.
