Answering Service Per Minute vs Per Call: Per-Minute Wins on Short Calls, Per-Call Past 2 to 8 Minutes

By Sharrk Team · October 25, 2026

Per-minute answering service plans are cheaper when your calls are short, and per-call plans are cheaper once your average call runs past a break-even point that falls between about 2 and 8 minutes, depending on whose per-minute rate you compare against. Sharrk skips the meter question for AI answering: a flat monthly plan with credits (Core is $99 a month, roughly 315 AI call minutes) answers every call 24/7, and Mako builds the whole setup from plain English.

The math below uses published prices from each company's own pricing page, checked October 25, 2026. If you want the broader "what does an answering service cost" picture, start with our answering service cost guide. This post is narrower: which billing model costs you less for the calls you actually get.

How do per-minute and per-call answering service pricing work?

Per-minute plans sell a bucket of receptionist minutes each month and charge an overage rate for each minute over. PATLive, Posh, MAP Communications, Ruby and Abby Connect all price live answering this way.

Per-call plans sell a bucket of calls, no matter how long each one runs. Smith.ai's receptionist plans work this way: Starter is $300 a month for 30 calls ($11.50 per call over), Basic is $810 for 90 calls ($10.50 over), and Pro is $2,100 for 300 calls ($8.50 over).

So your cost per call on a per-minute plan is your effective per-minute rate times your average call length. On a per-call plan it is fixed. That one difference decides which model wins.

Is per-minute or per-call cheaper? The break-even table

Divide the per-call price by a per-minute plan's effective rate (monthly price divided by included minutes) and you get the average call length where the two cost the same. Shorter calls favor the per-minute plan; longer calls favor per-call.

Plan (published monthly price)Effective rate per minuteBreak-even vs Smith.ai Starter ($10.00/call)Break-even vs Smith.ai Pro ($7.00/call)
Ruby, 50 min ($250)$5.002.0 min1.4 min
Ruby, 200 min ($720)$3.602.8 min1.9 min
Abby Connect, 200 min ($599)$3.003.3 min2.3 min
Posh, 200 min ($420)$2.104.8 min3.3 min
PATLive, 200 min ($349)$1.755.7 min4.0 min
MAP Communications, 125 min ($179)$1.437.0 min4.9 min
MAP Communications, 500 min ($649)$1.307.7 min5.4 min

How to read it: if your calls average 3 minutes, Ruby's 200-minute plan works out to about $10.80 a call, more than Smith.ai Starter's $10. PATLive's 200-minute plan works out to about $5.24 a call, well under it. The "per-call wins after 2 to 3 minutes" rule of thumb only holds against the higher-priced per-minute services. Against budget per-minute plans, per-call only pulls ahead on calls of 5 to 8 minutes.

What does a month actually cost at different call lengths?

Here is the same 30 calls a month priced at four average call lengths, using each provider's cheapest published combination of plan plus overage. Ruby and Abby Connect are left out of this table because their pricing pages do not list a dollar overage rate.

Average call length (30 calls)Minutes usedSmith.ai StarterPATLivePoshMAP Communications
1.5 min45$300$99 (50-min plan)$130 (50-min plan)$110.65 (pay as you go)
4 min120$300$230.80 (100-min plan + 20 × $2.09)$258 (100-min plan + 20 × $2.15)$179 (125-min plan)
8 min240$300$428.60 (200-min plan + 40 × $1.99)$504 (200-min plan + 40 × $2.10)$328.50 (125-min plan + 115 × $1.30)
12 min360$300$592.40 (300-min plan + 60 × $1.89)$720 (350-min plan + 10 × $2.00)$479.80 (250-min plan + 110 × $1.28)

Quick calls (message-taking, "are you open Saturday") make per-minute plans far cheaper. Long intake calls, booking with lots of questions, or callers who need explaining make per-call cheaper. Most home-service calls land in the middle, which is why your own average call length is the only number that settles it.

What billing details change the math?

These come straight from the providers' own pages:

  • Rounding. Ruby describes its own pricing as "per minute (rounded up in 60-second increments)." A 2-minute-10-second call bills as 3 minutes, which pushes your effective rate up.
  • What counts as a minute. PATLive says it bills only the time receptionists are live on your calls, not after-call notes or message entry.
  • Spam and sales calls. Smith.ai says you are not charged for spam or unsolicited sales calls as long as the lines you forward pass Caller ID. Abby Connect says its call blocking helps you avoid unwanted calls and save minutes.
  • Add-ons on per-call plans. Smith.ai's third-party intake add-on is $1.00 per call and covers up to one extra minute of questions. Ruby's comparison article argues that per-call providers often charge separately for scheduling, routing and integrations, so compare the full bill, not just the headline price.
  • Pay-as-you-go floors. PATLive's pay-as-you-go plan is $49 a month plus $2.99 a minute; MAP Communications' is $49 plus $1.37 a minute; Posh's entry plan is $65 plus $2.30 a minute.

How do you work out your own break-even?

  1. Pull last month's call log from your phone carrier and count answered calls and total talk minutes.
  2. Divide minutes by calls to get your average call length.
  3. Take the per-minute plan you are considering, divide its monthly price by its included minutes, and multiply by your average call length. That is your cost per call.
  4. Compare it to the per-call plan's monthly price divided by its included calls.
  5. Add rounding: if the plan rounds up each call to the next minute, add about half a minute to your average before step 3.
  6. Check how many of your calls are spam or wrong numbers and whether each plan bills them.

How does Sharrk price answering?

Sharrk uses flat monthly plans with credits that cover AI call minutes, texts and emails. Core is $99 a month (or $990 a year) with 47,500 credits a month, roughly 315 AI call minutes. Complete is $449 a month with 185,000 credits and a done-for-you build every month; Complete Plus is $999 a month with 400,000 credits and two builds a month. Phone numbers use 10,000 credits a month each. Full details are on the pricing page.

Because the AI agent answers every call 24/7, the same credits also reply to new leads in under 30 seconds by text, call or email, book jobs onto Sharrk's calendar, Calendly, Cal.com or ServiceTitan, and live-transfer callers to your team, cold or warm with a whisper brief. Every call is logged with a transcript, recording and the fields your agent captured, so you can see your real call lengths in your call reports.

Mako, Sharrk's AI assistant, builds all of this from plain English. Tell it "answer after-hours calls, book furnace tune-ups into ServiceTitan, and transfer no-heat emergencies to my on-call tech," and it drafts the agent, shows every change on an Apply card, waits for your OK, and keeps Undo ready if you change your mind.

Frequently asked questions

Is per-minute or per-call answering service pricing cheaper?

Per-minute pricing is cheaper when your calls are short, and per-call pricing is cheaper when they run long. Using published October 2026 prices, the break-even against Smith.ai's Starter plan ($10 a call) ranges from about 2 minutes (Ruby's 50-minute plan) to about 7.7 minutes (MAP Communications' 500-minute plan).

How do I calculate the break-even call length?

Divide the per-call plan's cost per call by the per-minute plan's effective rate per minute. For example, Smith.ai Starter is $300 for 30 calls ($10 a call) and PATLive's 200-minute plan is $349 ($1.75 a minute), so the break-even is about 5.7 minutes.

Do answering services round calls up to the next minute?

Some do, and it raises your real per-minute cost. Ruby describes its pricing as per minute, rounded up in 60-second increments, so a 2-minute-10-second call bills as 3 minutes. Check each provider's terms, since several pricing pages do not state their increments.

Am I charged for spam calls on an answering service?

It depends on the provider. Smith.ai says it does not charge for spam or unsolicited sales calls as long as forwarded lines pass Caller ID, and Abby Connect says its call blocking helps you save minutes on unwanted calls.
